Located in the historic Vine City neighborhood in downtown Atlanta, this net-zero house is designed by an interdisciplinary group of Georgia Tech students for the Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon. The 3-bed, 2-bath house is designed for optimal efficiency in materials and operation and utilizes many sustainability and optimization softwares to find the best systems for the house. The intent is to show that sustainability does not have to be unaffordable, and all products used in the house will be off-the-shelf should they need to be fixed or replaced by the homeowner. The Georgia Tech team is partnered with non-profit Westside Future Fund to construct the house for a first time homeowner and replaces an existing, water damaged structure. The team won 1st place in the single-family housing division of the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon competition.
